First Semester = Done Semester
Hello! Well today officially marks the end of my first semester. I'm actually already home right now because I got lucky and had my last final on the 16th, but nevertheless, today is the official last day of finals. Here are some things I learned over the course of four months.
1. Sign up for classes you are interested in
Now this may seem like common sense right? wrong. I just finished my first semester of college, first being the key word. When I was picking my classes I was constantly thinking of marketability and how it was going to affect my future and while that is important, I ended up with a class which frankly, I ended up dreading. I'm not going to tell you the class, because it was a good class, I learned a lot, but it just wasn't for me, and that's okay.
2. Don't sign up for a class because you think it will be easy
You know that class I just mentioned, the one I dreaded going to? I signed up for it because I was told it would be easy. Lesson learned. Turns out the class was very challenging for me, and I didn't enjoy it, that double whammy was not appreciated. Now I got somewhat lucky because the rest of my classes I found to be intellectually stimulating and genuinely interesting.
3. Stick out your classes
Now if you are trying your absolute best in a class but somehow are still failing halfway through the semester and there is no way to get your grade back up, then by all means, please drop the class. However, if you are just sick of class and frankly don't find it interesting, or just don't understand it then stick it through. I considered dropping my philosophy class toward the beginning of the semester because I didn't understand it. The problem was not with my professor, she's actually a great one and I look forward to taking more of her classes. The true issue was that I just did not understand what was going on, I also had no idea how to write a philosophy paper and my attempts were proving pretty mediocre. Something changed about two thirds into the semester and somehow I began to understand the class and apply it to my life. The readings became enriching and I was able to write a philosophical paper well. Now I would definitely recommend the class and I look forward to potentially taking more Philosophy classes.
4. Your intended major may not be the class you are excelling in
I am planning on being an Economics major. Now I'm not going to lie, Economics is something I find very interesting, but it does not come naturally to me, so it made sense that I found my Economics class difficult. That being said, it was still my favorite class. However, my difficultly in Economics this semester did cause me to rethink my major. I started thinking about how it will only get harder and if I was setting myself up for failure. Now I definitely still have these thoughts and by no means do I have all the answers, but what I'm telling myself right now is that I need to enjoy what I major in. And if I do declare Economics, I will enjoy it. I also tell myself that I probably don't need to worry about that right at this very moment because I still have seven semesters left.
One down, seven to go.
Have a wonderful Holiday Break!
