New semester means new schedule (duh)

World Mentor met with CodeUp, my first semester of college officially ended, and I went on WINTER BREAK!

My finalized spring semester schedule!
Here's the deal about trying to create a schedule as a first-year in college: plan for disappointment when it comes to those really popular classes. Now I know that sounds sad or like a bit of a downer, but honestly I wish I had known that more. The truth is since you are a first-year you register after everyone else and popular classes go fast. But you can still get into really fun classes, you just need to plan accordingly. I went into my registration time last semester with four separate schedules hoping to get the professors and classes I wanted on my first try. Cut to a week later I was still only enrolled in 10 hours for the spring semester. It turned out that the computer science retention rate shot up like the department wasn't expecting and there weren't enough seats in the labs for all of the students who wanted to take the classes. Factor in the fact that I had the second to last registration time and you can see my struggle. It wasn't until a few days before I went home for break that I was accepted off of the waitlist into my CS classes and officially registered for a full semester.

So with my things packed and my schedule on only mildly cracked ice I went home for break and promptly forgot about all of that until the day before classes when I went back to school and started planning my schedule again. It turns out I hadn't registered for the right time for one of my classes and hadn't registered my internship with the registrar (all because I was so worried about getting into classes I just registered for what I could).

This started me on my add/drop hunt for the right internship paperwork and fixing my schedule so I didn't have days with five classes and other days with only one. In the end it all worked out, but I did have to sign up for the one thing that every first-year must do at least once: an 8:30 am class. I know, I know--what was I thinking? I took an 8:30 last semester too, and I remember days where I had to drag myself out of bed and fight to stay awake in class (I'm not really a morning person at all). But, it was really important to me to find a class that interested me and that I felt was important enough to break my 8:30 rule. Luckily, I did. My 8:30 is Dr. Nadeau's Asian Religions class and it is fantastic! Now, I still find myself fighting internally about how early the class is, but Dr. Nadeau makes it so interesting that it isn't much of a fight and more just excitement for what is coming next in class.

While my first week was a little chaotic since my schedule was up in the air for a few days, I think it all worked out in my favor. I love my classes and I think 15 hours is a perfect amount for this semester.
