Advising (& other perks of Trinity)
One of the best things about Trinity is how small it is. If you visit, read a pamphlet, or talk to ANYONE you'll hear the same thing, but that's because it's actually true, I promise! There are five great reasons why Trinity's size is awesome.
1. You get to know your professors.
This is something that I have found to be very true. I would feel completely comfortable asking any of my professors from both last semester and this semester for a letter of recommendation. That's pretty cool, and it's not because I'm this superstar. It's honestly because Trinity professors want to know you, and they make an effort to learn everyone's name in every class as quickly as possible. Plus they even say hi to you when you're not in class. You know that awkward thing everyone does when they see someone they know (not super well), and don't want to embarrass themselves by saying hi? That doesn't happen here. All professors will say wave and ask how your day has been.
2. You get to see people your friends all the time.
Walking to class, I guarantee you pass by someone you know. Sometimes I'm just strolling along (or briskly walking so I'm not late), and I'll just pass by people that I don't have class with, but know. It's a nice way to just say hi or briefly catch up with someone you normally don't see.
3. You meet people from every major/background/social group/etc...
This sort of ties in with the second one. I don't only have friends in my hall; I also don't only have friends in my major, or my sorority for that matter. The wonderful thing is that it's a complete mix and sometimes you're friends with people that aren't in any of the organizations you're in. Basically, Trinity is a place where you're never limited, not even socially.
4. You are never (well not usually at least) lost.
So at first it's sort of confusing, but then because campus is pretty small, that confusion only lasts for about a week. The night before classes, my suite-mate Heather and I went to explore so we wouldn't be lost the next day. After that night I was completely prepared to navigate upper campus fairly well. I
5. You have great connections!
Everything has been so easy because I am at Trinity. I am able to find mentors for Entrepreneurial endeavors, connections have been effortless to make, and overall I'm always given pretty cool opportunities. Connections are something that I value a great deal because I recognize that it's not always what you know but who you know. I've found that throughout my short time here I have made fantastic connections and been given pretty cool opportunities.
One topic I want to touch on is Advising. During the summer everyone is assigned to an advisor, now once you decide and declare your major, if your current advisor is not in the same department then you will change advisors. Your initial advisor is someone to go over your class schedule with for the upcoming semester and just a great reference overall. However, you are not restricted to your advisor. In fact, you can basically meet with any Trinity professor as long as you email them and it's a great way to get to know other professors while also figuring out your life. Every professor here has extensive knowledge so someone has the answer to what you are looking for. I actually just met with Dr. Martinez last week about my Interdisciplinary Second Major in Entrepreneurship, but I will write about that later once it's more solidified.
