Mixers, lectures, and Playfair, oh my!

Previously on Roommates, classes and perfect ramen:

I woke up very early, moved into my dorm, met my roommate/suite-mates, and was introduced to the entrepreneurship hall. Quite an exciting start.

On the very same day NSO (New Student Orientation) began. With only a few hours to unpack and be with my parents, we were split up at 2 PM to start our respective orientations. One of which was held in the Laurie Auditorium and the other in the 100 degrees heat (can you guess where the students were?). The first day was all about meeting the people in your hall and all of the activities were run by the Trinity O-Team. So, after a bunch of ice breakers and a scavenger hunt that took us all across campus we finally returned to our dorms. That night was also our first hall meeting, where we all came together and Steve talked to us about expectations, rules, and answered all of our first day questions.
Faculty members spoke to new students about all of their
questions surrounding course load and the common curriculum.

The next few days were a nonstop, whirlwind of lectures over the most important aspects of life at Trinity. There was a lecture on TigerPaws (the site used for registering for classes and everything important in your academic life), there was a lecture on the Trinity Honor code (which is taken very seriously at Trinity and lays out the expectation of academic integrity at the University), and there were panels about general questions about classes and things like student life and involvement.

Among all of these lectures and tours and meetings was our first official gathering for the entire entrepreneurship hall, which took place in the Mabee dining hall. And this is where we got the goods. Not only did we get to meet two of our three instructors, we also got the low down on the difference between only being in the entrepreneurship class (2190) and being in the class and the hall. The biggest difference being all of the cool "shwag" (a la Dr. Martinez) the hall gets. Not only did we get unique idea journals and umbrellas, we will also get cool fleece jackets, t-shirts, a reduced membership fee to Geekdom and we get to go on a hall wide entrepreneurial mindset retreat.

But NSO wasn't just for learning about academics, it was also for getting to know our peers and the rest of the class of 2018! So not only did the O-Team show us the school they also put on a mixer where all first-years were welcome to mingle, dance and they had a really cool flip book photo booth set up. And they held the annual Playfair, and event full of ice breaking and team building games. The one thing I did feel like we didn't get enough information on though was the Bell Center (Trinity's main athletic center). Instead of getting any sort of tour or info session we have (at least I have) sort of been left on my own to stumble around trying to find basic exercise equipment.

The final piece of the long and exhausting NSO puzzle is Convocation (literally a "large formal assembly of people"). Convocation is when everyone gets dressed up and then the entire freshman class walks across campus to sit in the traditional assembly, sing the Alma mater (three times to be exact), and sign the honor code. After this we all went outside and were greeted by all of the faculty and students and were officially welcomed into the Trinity community. Usually this celebration is topped off with a traditional climb up the iconic tower, however due to a severe thunderstorm warning we skipped that part. All in all this week did exactly what the O-team set out to do, it showed me my new campus and introduced me to my peers, here's hoping I can remember everyone's name!
