Activities

This week I’m going to talk about something a little different and the reason why I’ve not blogged in a while. I got a concussion a couple of weeks ago. Now you may ask how does an average college student get a concussion, well I sincerely wish I had a more exciting story; however, the simple and true answer is cheerleading. This ties me into the topic I would actually like to discus today, college extra-curricular activities. Obviously, I do not have much experience on the topic, but here’s a first glance over the time I have been here and my experiences so far. Getting involved is great, actually not only is it great, but I would argue that it is in fact necessary. It’s wonderful to go to an activity with people who think similarly to you and just do that pursue the hobby that all of you enjoy. I kept all that in mind and during New Student Orientation week when we had a club fair of sorts I put my name down on anything I thought I could be interested in. This resulted in me getting emails that ranged from political clubs to sororities to cheerleading. Anyways, I decided that I would pursue cheerleading and decided to try out, (I even convinced Heather, my suite-mate to do it too), and a couple of weeks later, bam, Heather and I were cheerleaders. I’m going to speed the next bit up, because well it’s normal and boring. We went to practice and cheered at games together for a couple of months and then one day I got a concussion (but you already knew that, so no surprise there). Now this put priorities into perspective and I realized even though I enjoyed being on a team, I did not like being on the cheerleading team, and furthermore, the injury was seriously messing with my schoolwork, which lead to me quitting. Now I know that I’m a wimp for quitting after one concussion; however, this brings me to my point, if you join an activity on whim in college and decide that actually, you do not like spending your time doing it, then don’t. Now this sounds like a quitter attitude, but it’s not. All I’m saying is that there are tons of activities in college that you can fill your time with; pick extra-curriculars that truly empower you. College is all about learning, and that definitely includes making a few mistakes.

Disclaimer: Even though I am no longer on the cheerleading team, they are a group of people that I absolutely respect and was lucky to be on a team with. My disliking of being a cheerleader has nothing to do with Trinity or the team.
