The most intense 72 hours ever

Previously on Roommates, classes, and perfect ramen:

TUWIC participated in the nationwide Sit With Me red chair campaign, I posted another blog for VentureLab, and the cold weather has finally subsided for a few days.

Starting on Friday at 3 pm I embarked on one of the most intense, and one of the most tweeted events of my life. Three day start-up is a 72 hour challenge to build a company from scratch. We started from brainstorming all the way to a five minute pitch session at the end of Sunday night. This was no easy feat.

On Friday we were split into small brainstorming groups of 3-5 and tasked with coming up with at least two pitch-able options in three hours. At 6:30 we all reconvened and every group presented their two ideas. Following this we voted on our favorite idea and on what we thought was the most do-able. There were three company ideas chosen and by 9 pm we were off in our groups starting a company. Originally I joined a group that wanted to create the Airbnb of storage because they were looking for someone creative to be a designer for them. Since I use both Adobe InDesign and Photoshop I thought this would be a great experience for me. But, about 20 minutes into our first group meeting I realized storage may not be the best fit for me. The group was really big and soon most of the creative jobs were being outsourced to internet providers. So I chose to switch groups (I was the only one to do this) to a much smaller and more social project. That was probably the best decision I made all weekend.

My new group is called WorldMentor (you may have heard about that in Shivani's post!) and it aims to connect aspiring entrepreneurs (mentees) around the world with experienced entrepreneurs (mentors) in a long-lasting and meaningful mentor-mentee relationship. World Mentor was so much fun to work on and see how much it could develop in just three days. And to see my part in it was so great. In the new group I was able to express my creativity and create not only a logo for the company but also a website and co-create the content with Shivani!

The event was held at none other than VentureLab (where I have my internship!). And along with the limitless snacks and beanbags they provided for us, we also had access to some amazing mentors. The mentors were experienced entrepreneurs who were there purely to share their thoughts and help guide us while creating our companies. Needless to say their input was invaluable. Certain aspects of the company we would have never even considered and they were right there reminding us and showing us new cool ways to approach some of our most daunting problems.

Another part of the weekend was the social media competition. The entire event used the #3DSSATX (3 Day Startup San Antonio TX) and the student with the most interaction on social media won a prize. So naturally, as competitive as I am I needed to win. Which brings us to the most tweeted weekend of my life. Not only did I keep my followers updated on my personal Twitter, I also put those social media skills to use and created both a Facebook and Twitter page for WorldMentor.

Overall this past weekend was an amazing experience and I learned so much. I had never really thought about it but there is a lot that can get done in just three days if you really put all of your effort into it (and a lot of caffeine). We have chosen to pursue WorldMentor in the future and plan to pitch it in the spring! More info to come! But if you are an aspiring entrepreneur participating in a 3DS event is one of the best things you can do and I highly recommend it!
