What Is Product Management

Product management is an excellent career option for those with an entrepreneurial mindset and a technical background. While there are PM opportunities in every industry, the PM job has become increasingly more predominant in the tech sector. I first learned about product management from within Google and fell in love with the role. I saw it as a way to become the CEO of a product, working with designers, developers and most importantly users to create great products.

There are three reason why I want to become a PM. I have had some great experiences as a software engineer however my favorites parts of those internships has been working on the design and thinking about how users will utilize the features I am building. I realised early on that I love consumer facing products for this exact reason.

Second, I love thinking about the business side of things as well as the technical side. This is why I have always been so drawn to entrepreneurship, because I love thinking about all aspects of the product. Wearing many hats is a common thread to starting your own company and the same idea applies to product management.

Third, I want to leverage my experience working on various teams to help better communicate with engineers and fill in the gaps where they need help. I want to facilitate their job in any way I can, even if that means doing a few unrelated tasks.

Now why I am motivated to pursue product management is not unique, many individuals would be drawn to the role for the exact same reasons. I also had no idea the role existed until I already started working as a software engineer, so I encourage you to look into the PM role and see if it's something you might want to pursue.
