Why All Computer Science Majors

As a computer science major myself I may be a little biased, however, I truly think all computer science students should take entrepreneurship courses. Here are three reasons why - you can sell what you build, you can join amazing teams, and you can become the next big name.

For me and many others in the computer science major, when we build something with code we can see the potential for it to be sold and given out to the world. While not every app idea is a great one, studying entrepreneurship helps give you the tools to identify what makes a good idea, how to create a business plan, and how to market it and start a company. As a computer science major, you have the skills to build out a cool startup ideas and taking entrepreneurship classes will help you take that code and turn it into a company.

Second, by jumping into entrepreneurship you can join some amazing team and projects that desperately need a developer. For those developers lacking their own cool ideas, this route can be incredibly rewarding. As a founding member you can still make a lot of impact and get the pleasure of working on a small team. Taking entrepreneurship courses can give majors a test run at what this role would be like as they would work on a team project during class. I think many students will find themselves happier in this fast paced environment rather than at a big tech company.

Lastly by learning about entrepreneurship, you would be setting yourself up to be a big name. The next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg could be you. Those who innovate, the true entrepreneurs, make lots of impact. And as we have seen with the tech boom, many of these individuals are in tech. So by taking the computer science background and applying entrepreneurship, you’re creating a recipe for success no matter what you do.
